Positivity: The Movies

Society has changed a lot over the course of the last few years, and unfortunately the content shown in movies targeted towards kids and family have changed drastically. Take for example, I was going with some friends to see Catching Fire of The Hunger Games series, which everyone at least knows is about teenagers killing each other brutally on live television, and I see that the shows before us theatre is emptying and out comes thirty  children ranged from ages 3-8. Needless to say, this disturbed me. That is the choice of the parents, not a good choice, but this movie was not marketed towards kids. There is other movies that are targeted at children that really shouldn’t be such as newer superhero movies like batman and spiderman, especially batman which takes a very dark tone. The movie may be rated PG-13 but The Dark Knight lunch boxes certainly aren’t. This one of the many examples of feeding off what was once there as a kids comic and T.V. show and twisting it to get more money. Because of how many movies are showing this kind of violence and dark moods, kids are starting to get use to it. But there are thousands of other movies you can show kids besides the gloomy and scarring dark knight starring the joker (lets not forget about Heath Ledger portraying his terrifying villain a bit to well!) This is where the positivity of Disney movies come in. Disney studios has always been known as the trustworthy source for good family entertainment that contains good values and lessons for kids. Disney incorporates life lessons and teaches kids to really use their imagination and live for themselves. People try to stress the unrealistic expression of Disney movies princesses and characters without realizing that they are not suppose to be realistic to life. They are fairytales, fictional and sweet. They are humorous and all contain a main message, such as Disney’s Frozen, which teaches the important of family and not letting fear control your life. Kids will take something from that, whether it be to be brave like Anna and Elsa or to be thankful for their siblings, not that they’d admit that. The most important thing Disney does for children in my opinion is pushing their potential for their imaginations and creativity further. That being said, even Disney has it’s flaws, but they are still using their influence to give kids healthier entertainment then that that is around them.
